Gat Andres Bonifacio: The Anti-Colonial National Hero of the Philippines (Bonifacio Series I)

Every November 30, the Philippines celebrates Bonifacio Day to commemorate the birthday of the Father of Philippine Revolution, Andres Bonifacio y de Castro. The second foremost figure in the Southeast Asian country's pantheon of heroes, he is in fact regarded by Filipino nationalists more highly than the only one other, but 'more official' national hero,* Jose Protacio Rizal, who is criticized as having been an "American-sponsored hero" chosen by the United States colonial government over the "too radical" Bonifacio and the 'Sublime Paralytic' Apolinario Mabini...XXXX

Surviving official letterhead communications dated 1897 point to Bonifacio's various designations that include being the "Supreme President, Government of the Revolution." Perhaps the most telling proofs come from non-partisan sources of the period. Nineteenth century Spanish historian Jose M. del Castillo, in his 1897 writing "El Katipunan" or "El Filibusterismo en Filipinas," describes the first national elections in the Philippines from which Bonifacio emerged as the President, and Plata, Jacinto, del Rosario, Pantas and Pacheco as cabinet officials. This is corroborated by the February 8, 1897 issue of the international publication "La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana" in its article about the Philippine revolution and which featured an engraved portrait of "Andres Bonifacio, Titulado 'Presidente' de la Republica Tagala,"**** clad in a dark suit and white tie.....

The revolutionary leader was Andres Bonifacio y de Castro, murdered May 10, 1897 in a remote moutain in the archipelagic islands the hero called the Haring Bayang Katagalugan (Sovereign Nation of Katagalugan). Sa pagbabago o transformation ng KKK mula sa isang pagiging lihim na panghimagsik na samahan upang maging isang bukas at de facto na pamahalaan ng mga Tagalog* (lahat ng mga katutubong/indios mamamayan ng buong kapuluan), kikilos bilang isang organisadong pamahalaan ang mga anak ng Inang Bayan upang labanan at patatalsikin ang kolonyal na Kastila. Said communications that included letters and other important documents pointed to Bonifacio as occupying the highest post in the revolutionary government through varying titles:

27/28 April 1897 - The Supremo and brother Procopio are treacherously abducted by the forces of Bonzon and Paua … Bonzon shoots the Supremo in the arm. Paua then moves to kill the Katipunan Supreme President by stabbing him in the throat with a dagger but one of Bonifacio’s men plead that his life be taken instead. We credit and laud Supremo Bonifacio for organizing and strengthening under very difficult colonial circumstances the Kataastaasan Kagalang-galang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK), that noble society that aimed to liberate the country from the yoke of Spanish colonization.

Rizal provided a great inspiration for a nationwide assertion of independence. Bonifacio gave national life and force to Rizal's "filibuster" Elias character. Gat Rizal was being prudent disowning the Philippine Revolution of 1896. Supremo Bonifacio had the incredible historical foresight to push through with it despite initial lack of arms.

Si Gat Andres Bonifacio at ang Pagbuo ng PagkaBANSA

Si Andres Bonifacio naman ang bumuo sa isang himagsikan ng mga mamamayan. Ipinanganak siya sa Tondo noong Nobyembre 1863. Sa tulong ng Katipunan, pinalaganap ni Bonifacio ang konsepto ng bayan. Ibang iba ito sa konsepto ng nación ng mga ilustrado. Ito ay nakabatay sa pagbuo ng/kay Inang Bayan at pagtatag ng Haring Bayan (estadong bayan) para sa buong kapuluan (Republika ng Katagalugan). Sinasabing ang Inang Bayan ang dapat panggalingan ng pagbubuo dahil sa kanyang sinapupunan lamang nagkakaroon ng tunay na kabuuan. Sa ilalim ng iisang Inang Bayan, nagkakaroon ng kapatiran ng mga ito. Ginamit ni Bonifacio ang metapora ng mag-anak bilang simbolo ng pagkakaisa ng mga bayan sa buong kapuluan at noong Hulyo 6, 1892, itinatag niya ang Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK).

Manufacturing Consent: Pinoy Middle Class & the Consumption of "EDSA" Yellow Propaganda

ANG dahilan kaya kung bakit mas middle class kaysa lower class na naloko sa EDSA 2 power grab ay ang mas malaking ‘consumption’ nila ng propagandang dilaw??? Hindi ba’t napaka.estups ng mga nagpunta doon na naglalayong mapaganda ang Pilipinas subali’t ang niluklok ay ang sinasabing “Most Corrupt President in Philippine History,” ang nagumpisa ng ‘culture of impunity?

Ayon sa Amerikanong linguist, cognitive scientist, pilosopo at aktibista na si Noam Chomsky, ang mga mas mataas ang pinag.aralan ay mas maraming propagandang tinatanggap sa pangkahalatan dahil mas madalas silang magbasa. Chaomsky's 'Manufacturing Consent' theory is essentially saying that (mainstream) media content is structured to restrict the expression of dissenting voices as part of a system of indoctrination under a supposed 'democratic' free press. Nakita ito sa Vietnam War. Sinulat ni Chaomsky:
Even at the peak of opposition to the U.S. war, only a minuscule portion of the intellectuals opposed the war out of principle—on the grounds that aggression is wrong. Most intellectuals came to oppose it well after leading business circles did—on the “pragmatic” grounds that the costs were too high.




Those who were gullible enough to join Edsa 2—at least the conspirators who aimed for nothing but power grab—had no idea that the text brigade was centralized. That the Arroyos themselves bought the anti-Erap tabloids for distribution. That the D._.M. “whistle-blower” Chavit Singson and First Gentle—g and seditious military officers had a BLOODY Plan B in case they were not able to oust Erap without bloodshed.

Those who were gullible enough to join EDSA 2—at least those who were not part of the conspirators who aimed for nothing but power grab—had no idea that the "People Power" 2 power grab was cooked up early enough during Erap’s term. Isa sa mga pagplaplanong ito ang OPLAN EXCELSIS na kasama pa si sinful Cardinal.

Ako ay dating galit kay Erap. Pero nang nag-umpisa na ang Erap Resign Movement at nakita ko ang marami sa mga natutulak nito ay marurumi ay bumaligtad ako. Pwera diyan kay warlord, jueteng lord Singson ay may isang pang gobernardor akong kilala na jueteng lord na eh mmmtay karibal pa. At ang kapatid po o in-law ni Cory noong gobernador ng Tarlac ay nuknukan ng pagiging jueteng lord din. Bakit saksakan ng corrupt  ay magpapatalsik ng corrupt daw samantalang walang dayang hinalal siya (si Erap) ng bayan?

Up to now, the imposed yellow propaganda wrecks havoc on the minds of some of the well-educated Filipinos, expatriates included, who cannot seem to have the common sense to go beyond the framework of imposed information crafted by members of the seditious conspiratorial  clique. They continue to wallow in the sorry state of gullibility-but-prejudice-against-Erap, incredibly buying arguments such as how the EDSA 2 ouster of Estrada is supposedly justified by the 2007 Plunder decision and that the millennium President is deemed resigned based on the "totally test" and that never-before-existing "constructive resignation" ruling is not at all anomalous.

Hello? 1.) Hindi ba makita na ang Plunder na hatol kay Erap ay politically motivated upang maipalabas ang sinasabi nilang "justified" ang power grab: hindi lamang "special court" ang naghatol kung saan pili ang mga umupong huwes kundi ginantipalaan pa ang halos lahat sa mga ito ng posisyon sa Korte Suprema. 2.) Can't they also see how biased and unbecoming of their Supreme Court positions the justices of the hilarious court of Hilario Davide were? Davide not only failed to hold the prosecution in contempt for their walk-out during the Estrada impeachment proceedings but also attended seditious EDSA 2 and proclaimed Arroyo "acting President" BEFORE Erap even stepped down of Malacanang. Davide was also rewarded with two position soon after his retirement--as Senior Presidential Adviser on Electoral Reforms  (tanungin ninyo kung anong sabi niya ukol sa Hello Garci) at pagkatapos, bilang Ambassador/Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the United Nation

Moreoever, that court admitted the previously inadmissible--what should be the HEARSAY evidence--the newspaper-published diary of former Exec. Secretary Edgardo Angara, and amazingly regarded its contents as an "authoritative" look into the 'mind' of Estrada--sans the benefit of expert psychological witness. At ang pinaka-nakakahindik ay ang pag-iimbento nila Davide ng "constructive resignation" na basehan daw para ibigay kay Gloria Arroyo ang upuan ng Pangulo. Dahil hindi naman permanently incapacitated, hindi convicted (condition for removal from office), hindi patay, o hindi nag-resign si Erap para matugunan ang mga itinakdang ng Saligang Batas, nag-imbento ang mga seditious justices ng hanggang ngayon ay hindi maintindihan na "constructive resignation."


 Wala sa Wisyo 

Sa madaling salita, ang katwiran nila sa EDSA 2 power grab ay kung ano-anong teknikalidad at gawa-gawang legalese na galing mismo sa grupo ng magnanakaw ng kapanyarihan at labas sa framework ng batas/konstitusyon. Ito ang pinipilit nilang paniwalaan  ng tao at kung mahina-hina nga naman ang kaisipan eh baka madala sa pinaa.agos ng walang konsensyang media. Wisyo sana ay pairalin rin ng mga "edukadong" ito at hindi maging uto-uto sa ipinalalabas ng magkakakuntsaba na teknikalidad at pagi-imbento ng konsepto para magmukhang tinapakan ang saligang batas.

Sobrang tutok siguro sa DILAW na media na puro propaganda ang alam, kaya nag-utak dilaw, pumunta sa Edsa 2 nang hindi nagiisip, analytically that is. At hanggang ngayon ay hindi maintindihan na ang mga magnanakaw ay siyempre pa pagtatakpan ang kanilang pagnanakaw.

Kaya kung hindi  magiging alisto at dilat sa propaganda ng dilaw na media eh baka mas mainam pa ang estado  ng mas ordinaryong mamamayan na hindi puno ng propaganda ang utak. Sabi nga ni Chaomsky, ang mga ordinaryong mamamayan ay kayang intindihin and mundo. Kailangan lamang ay magsama-sama to go beyond the imposed propaganda, kumilos ayon sa kanilang disenteng interes, at linangin ang isang malayang kaisipan.

Bakit ba "language of the streets" ang Wikang P/Filipino?

Dahil marami ang nagtatanong kung ano ang masasabi ng isa sa pangunahing tagapagtaguyod ng Wikang Filipino sa hindi lang sa akademya kundi para sa bayan upang makabuo ng isang talastasang bayan ukol sa artikulo ni James Soriano sa Manila Bulletin ukol sa Wikang Ingles sa Pilipinas, aking pinapaskil sa facebook ang pakikipagtalastasan sa akin ni Dr. Zeus A. Salazar:
Ang James bang ito ay yung nagsulat sa Inquirer (sic) tungkol sa kanyang pagiging Inglesero (kung papaano siya naging Inglesero at kung papaano niya napagtanto na mas malalim ang Pilipino, di tulad ng pagkakaalam niya sa simula; ngunit nasisiyan pa rin siya na siya ay Inglesero dahil ito ang karaniwang landas tungo sa tagumpay sa ating lipunan ngayon, sa ngayon)? May katotohanan itong huling bahagi at nakita ito ng kanyang nanay na nagdril sa kanya mula sa pagkabata upang siya ay maging Inglesero [bagamat hindi talaga sapat ang kanyang kaalaman sa wikang Ingles, tulad ng makikita sa napakaraming Inglesero at nagpapaka-Inglesero, laluna yung mga nasa Konggreso; "debater" daw siya kaya malamang na kinagaya niya ang punto ng Kano o baka Ingles pa, na hindi garantiya na gagap niya ang balarila ng Anglo-Amerikano]. Ang nakainis siguro sa iyo ay nilait pa niya ang wikang Tagalog/P/filipino dahil sa kanyang palagay ito ay wikang lansangan lamang at hindi wika ng edukasyon [may katotohan ito sa pangkalahatan hanggang ngayon at ito nga ang ating kinakabaka hanggang ngayon at sa palagay ko tayo ay magtatagumpay, sa simpleng dahil na ang wikang pambansa ay wika nga ng lansangan (ibig sabihin, ng Bayan) kung kaya't hindi na maiiiwasan na maging wika ng buong sistema ng edukasyon, bagay na makikita sa kasalukuyang islogan ng buwan ng wika; ang kailangan lang ay ang patuloy at masinsinang pakikibaka] at hindi rin wikang intelektuwal [ang dahilan nito ay marahil dalawa: ang una, wala siyang alam sa mga nakasulat sa P/filipino at Tagalog, bagay na hindi nakapagtataka dahil sa pangyayaring nakatuon (itinuon ng kanyang nanay dahil sa carrierismo) ang kanyang pansin at punyagi sa Ingles at sa kulturang Anglo-Amerikano (samakatuwid iyon ang pinag-aksayahan ng panahon para magtagumpay sa lipunang Inglesero ng Kasalukuyan); ang pangalawa, hindi siya mismo isang intelektuwal (dahil ang isang tunay na intelektuwall ay interesado sa lahat, sa iba't ibang wika at kultura at sa sarili niyang (mga) wika at kalinangan at kabihasnan). May katiting siyang pagka-intelektuwal dahil sa napuna niya naman ang mga katangian ng sariling wika, hindi man niya ito ginagamit liban sa pakikipag-usap di-umano sa mga katulong, drayber, atbp.; tulad ng dating lakad-patong dating Miss Universe na si Gloria Diaz na pagkatapos ay natutong masinsinang magsalita ng Tagalog dahil naging aktres simula nang naging "Pinakamagandang Hayo[?] sa Balat ng Lupa" ni Vic Vargas. Sa ganito, mas intelehente pa siya sa kanyang sa wari'y katoto na si Sergio Apostol; ang bentahe niya rito ay mas bata pa siya at may pag-asa pang matuto at magbago. Batid na niya ang kadakilaan ng wikang atin; nais niya lang magtagumpay sa kasalukuyang lipunan ng Ingleserong elit.
Tagalog marahil si James; "miseducated" lang sa wari sa sentido ni Constantino (na sa kabila ng lahat ng kanyang anti-amerikanismo ay nagsulat ng halos lahat ng kanyang akda sa Ingles, pinasalin niya lang ang ilan, bagamat Tagalog siyang malapit sa bayang kinagisnan ni Balagtas); tila naman hindi siya katulad ni DUA BALABAL ng SOAS daw at ng City University of London, isang Tagalog din, na ngayon ay nasa Latvia (?) na raw -- ipinagtanggol niya, tulad ng alam ninyo ni Atoy, ang Ingles sa pamamagitan ng internasyunalismo. Hindi rin s katulad si James ng ilang di-Tagalog na ipinagtatanggol ang kanilang pagiging Inglesero sa pamamgitan ng kanilang wikang etniko na kadalasan ay hindi na nila talagang gagap (si Apostol ay ganito). Ipinapahayag ni James ang kanyang "miseducation" (maling pagkapalaki) sa wikang Ingles at tanto at batid niya ang importansya ng wikang pambansa; kailangan lang kasi ng maraming umangat sa buhay na makibagay sa kasalukuyang lipunang Inglesero. Ingat.

Nota ni Jesusa Bernardo:

Ang James Soriano na tinutukoy ay nagsulat ng artikulong nakakabahala at masasabing nagiinsulto sa wikang Filipino bilang "language of the streets." Wika daw ng kalye ang ating wika, samantalang ang wikang Ingles daw ay wika ng kaalaman.

Kung si Ka Tony Donato, isang komersyal na alagad ng sining at dating mananaliksik ng National Historical Commission ang tatanungin, siguradong sasabihin niyang si James Soriano ay isang "pusang tumatahol." Lol. Ako naman iba ang sasabihin ko diyan dahil malamang ay isang mestizo si James Soriano kaya masasabing isa siyang hybrid ng pusa (Filipino) at aso (Westerner) na mas gustong tumahol kaysa ngumiyaw.

Sabagay, umamin naman itong si James Soriano na "split-level Filipino" siya, na "disconnected" siya sa pagiging Pilipino, sa identidad bilang mamamayan ng, at lahing mula sa, ating bansang Pilipinas. Sa huli, sinabi niyang ang wikang P/Filipino ay maaring maging wika ng kaalaman nguni't hindi ng mga nakapagaral. Ang basa ko dito ay nakikita niya ang katotohanan na sa kasalukuyan, ang ating sariling wika ay ginagamit ng wasto o lubos sa ating sistemang pang-edukasyon. Sabi nga ni Dok Zeus Salazar ay kailangan pa ng maiging pakikibago para makamit ito.

Ang tanong ko dito ay bakit ba kailangang ipinaglalaban pa ang ating wika upang mangibabaw ito? Bakit ang ating sariling wika ang dehado samantalang tayo ay nandito sa ating sariling lupa at hindi sa lupain ng imperyalistang Kalbong Agila o ng puting bakang Espana? Hindi ba dapat na ang ating sariling wika ang nananaig? Matagal na tayong malaya sa mga puting mananakop, hindi ba?

Ang mga katulad ni James Soriano ay nakikita, nararamdaman, at naiintindihan ang katotohanan na ang wikang Ingles, imbes na ang wikang P/Filipino, ang wika ng may kapangyarihan o impluwensya sa bayang ito. Na ang wikang banyagang dala ng lumusob at sumakop sa ating noong Digmaang Pilipino-Amerikano (1899-1914) ang wika na magbibigay sa kanyang ng pribilehiyo sa ating lipunan. Maraming nagalit sa pang-insulto niya sa ating wika nguni't ano ba ang puno't dulo nito?  Hindi si James Soriano kundi ang sistemang pinaiiral ng mga 'tumatahol, hindi ngumingiyaw' na mga elit ang ugat nito. Iyan ang ating puntiryahin, ang ating bigyang lunas.

Language, learning, identity, privilege

MANILA, Philippines — English is the language of learning. I’ve known this since before I could go to school. As a toddler, my first study materials were a set of flash cards that my mother used to teach me the English alphabet.

My mother made home conducive to learning English: all my storybooks and coloring books were in English, and so were the cartoons I watched and the music I listened to. She required me to speak English at home. She even hired tutors to help me learn to read and write in English.

In school I learned to think in English. We used English to learn about numbers, equations and variables. With it we learned about observation and inference, the moon and the stars, monsoons and photosynthesis. With it we learned about shapes and colors, about meter and rhythm. I learned about God in English, and I prayed to Him in English.

Filipino, on the other hand, was always the ‘other’ subject — almost a special subject like PE or Home Economics, except that it was graded the same way as Science, Math, Religion, and English. My classmates and I used to complain about Filipino all the time. Filipino was a chore, like washing the dishes; it was not the language of learning. It was the language we used to speak to the people who washed our dishes.

We used to think learning Filipino was important because it was practical: Filipino was the language of the world outside the classroom. It was the language of the streets: it was how you spoke to the tindera when you went to the tindahan, what you used to tell your katulong that you had an utos, and how you texted manong when you needed “sundo na.”

These skills were required to survive in the outside world, because we are forced to relate with the tinderas and the manongs and the katulongs of this world. If we wanted to communicate to these people — or otherwise avoid being mugged on the jeepney — we needed to learn Filipino.

That being said though, I was proud of my proficiency with the language. Filipino was the language I used to speak with my cousins and uncles and grandparents in the province, so I never had much trouble reciting.

It was the reading and writing that was tedious and difficult. I spoke Filipino, but only when I was in a different world like the streets or the province; it did not come naturally to me. English was more natural; I read, wrote and thought in English. And so, in much of the same way that I learned German later on, I learned Filipino in terms of English. In this way I survived Filipino in high school, albeit with too many sentences that had the preposition ‘ay.’

It was really only in university that I began to grasp Filipino in terms of language and not just dialect. Filipino was not merely a peculiar variety of language, derived and continuously borrowing from the English and Spanish alphabets; it was its own system, with its own grammar, semantics, sounds, even symbols.

But more significantly, it was its own way of reading, writing, and thinking. There are ideas and concepts unique to Filipino that can never be translated into another. Try translating bayanihan, tagay, kilig or diskarte.

Only recently have I begun to grasp Filipino as the language of identity: the language of emotion, experience, and even of learning. And with this comes the realization that I do, in fact, smell worse than a malansang isda. My own language is foreign to me: I speak, think, read and write primarily in English. To borrow the terminology of Fr. Bulatao, I am a split-level Filipino.

But perhaps this is not so bad in a society of rotten beef and stinking fish. For while Filipino may be the language of identity, it is the language of the streets. It might have the capacity to be the language of learning, but it is not the language of the learned.

It is neither the language of the classroom and the laboratory, nor the language of the boardroom, the court room, or the operating room. It is not the language of privilege. I may be disconnected from my being Filipino, but with a tongue of privilege I will always have my connections.

So I have my education to thank for making English my mother language.
