Gat Andres Bonifacio: The Anti-Colonial National Hero of the Philippines (Bonifacio Series I)

  • EVERY November 30, the Philippines celebrates Bonifacio Day to commemorate the birthday of the Father of Philippine Revolution, Andres Bonifacio y de Castro. The second foremost figure in the country's pantheon of heroes, he is in fact regarded by Filipino nationalists more highly than the only one other but 'more official' national hero,* Jose Rizal, who is criticized as having been an "American-sponsored hero" chosen by the United States colonial government over the "too radical" Bonifacio and the 'Sublime Paralytic' Apolinario Mabini.

    The Anti-Colonial National Hero

Rizal, writes eminent historian Renato Constantino, was undoubtedly a great Filipino--true martyr and patriot-- but the fact remains that veneration to him was promoted by the US colonial government because among others, he did not advocate independence, neither armed resistance to the government. This, in contrast to Bonifacio, who founded the revolutionary secret society Kataastaasan Kagalang-galang na Katipunan nang manga Anak nang Bayan ((KKK), and subsequently launched the revolution against Spanish colonial rule. Choosing the "unregenerate" Mabini, who lived long enough to support continued war against America well into his last years, or Bonifacio, who clearly aimed for independence for his country, would have been counter to the colonial policy of the new imperialist master.

Supremo of the Filipino Revolutionary Government

Bonifacio, in fact, formed the first national government of the natives with the intent and vision that the Katipunan would govern the islands after any overthrow of Spanish colonial rule. Beyond being a secret militant organization, the Katipunan was a revolutionary government with a bureaucratic framework, own set of laws and founded on democratic and moral principles summed up under the KKK Cartilla or primer. Even the US Library of Congress record proves such to an extent: "the Katipunan insinuated itself into the community by setting up mutual aid societies and education for the poor." The same text points to how Bonifacio, with a 30,000-strong** KKK "proclaimed Filipino independence on August 23, 1896."***

After the Katipuneros launched the uprising against the Spaniards, the "Great Plebeian" hero set out to transform the national secret organization into an open and de facto revolutionary government. The founder of the Katipunan became the president and headed a cabinet composed of those he trusted, including Emilio Jacinto, Secretary of State; Teodoro Plata, War; Aguado del Rosario, Interior; Briccio Pantas, Justice; and Enrique Pacheco, as Secretary of Finance. While certain historians had tried to downplay or dispute his formation and leadership of the earliest national government by and of the Filipinos, clear evidence that had only quite recently been made available bestows on Andres Bonifacio the glorious, unequivocal title of being the truly first President of the Philippine Revolutionary Government.

Surviving official letterhead communications dated 1897 point to the great hero’s various designations that include being the "Supreme President, Government of the Revolution." Perhaps the most telling proofs come from non-partisan sources of the period. Nineteenth century Spanish historian Jose M. del Castillo, in his 1897 writing "El Katipunan" or "El Filibusterismo en Filipinas," describes the first national elections in the Philippines from which Bonifacio emerged as the President, and Plata, Jacinto, del Rosario, Pantas and Pacheco as cabinet officials. This is corroborated by the February 8, 1897 issue of the international publication "La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana" in its article about the Philippine revolution and which featured an engraved portrait of “Andres Bonifacio, Titulado ‘Presidente’ de la Republica Tagala,”**** clad in a dark suit and white tie.

Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa" (Love of Motherland)

Bonifacio Day for 2008 is the 145th birth anniversary of this fervent, plebeian, nationalist hero who might arguably have not been very effective in the battlefield, but possessed the organizational genius that paved the way for the revolutionary struggle for independence by the Malay race of the Philippine Islands. The depth of Gat Andres Bonifacio's ardent love for his country and people can be gleaned from his famous poem "Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa" (Love for Motherland), which has been popularized as a song in the modern times.

The poem is a poignant call for nationalism that emanates from within the people and not from anyone or anywhere else. In it, Katipunan Supremo Andres Bonifacio laments the suffering of his people under Spanish colonial misrule and as well, the seeming loss of pride in their race. A patriotic song, it views love for country as perhaps the noblest and purest love there is. "Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa" was first disseminated during the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule in the 1890s, appearing in the first and only issue of the Katipunan publication, Kalayaan. It was adapted to music during the Martial Law years.

    Umawit, tumula, kumata't at sumulat,
    Kalakhan din niya'y isinisiwalat.

    Walang mahalagang hindi inihandog
Ng may pusong mahal sa Bayang nagkupkop,
    dugo, yaman, dunong, katiisa't pagod,
    Buhay ma'y abuting magkalagut-lagot.

Bakit?

    Walang alaala't inaasa-asam
    Kundi ang makita'y lupang tinubuan.

    Pati ng magdusa'y sampung kamatayan
Wari ay masarap kung dahil sa bayan
At lalong mahirap. Oh, himalang bagay!

    Ang anak, asawa, magulang, kapatid;
    Isang tawag niya'y tatalidang pilit.

Hayo na nga, hayo, kayong nagabuhay
    Sa pag-asang lubos ng kaginhawahan
    At walang tinamo kundi kapaitan,

    Ng bala-balaki't makapal na hirap,
    muling manariaw't sa baya'y lumiyag.

    Ipahandug-handog ang busong pag-ibig
    At hanggang may dugo'y ubusing itigis;
kung sa pagtatanggol, buhay ay mapatid,
Ito'y kapalaran at tunay na langit!

the glenn may thesis establish the fact that there was indeed a move by the nationalist historians to reinvent bonifacio. the retranslations which was where the weight of his argument falls is favored by modern historian like ocampo. there is no doubt that he was a pioneering revolutionary but a review of history would show us that he was a failure, if there was any battles that has been won, the victories came from cavite - not manila, these men would later assasinate him, our republic disunited before it was even proclaimed.

the portrayal of him being poor, uneducated also does not speak truth about who he really was, in fact his communication with the wealthiest men during his campaign for funds clearly shows that he's not the poor Andres we know. the mason hero led professional and propertied individuals, his katipunan is not some poorly organized group, by the time it was discovered they were already in the thousands.

Thanks for the visit, withonespast.

1. That Glenn May thesis is most ridiculous. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about that author:

"Glenn Anthony May gives a controversial and widely dismissed theory that his [Bonifacio's] role as a national hero was largely invented. Until now, there is considerable debate as to whether the Supremo should be considered the first Philippine President instead of Aguinaldo, one of Bonifacio's Katipunan generals who would be responsible for his arrest and execution on May 10, 1897."

If there's any historical figure who's been reinvented, it is no other than Emilio Aguinaldo. I remember my now-deceased dad commenting on my school textbook featuring Aguinaldo, saying that that in his time, Aguinaldo was negatively viewed by Filipinos--unlike what certain historian make him out to be today.

The best persons to judge Bonifacio and Aguinaldo are those who lived long enough to remember and tell and vote. Remember how Aguinaldo was shamefully repudiated by Filipinos who did not vote for him in the 1935 presidential elections? Imagine the "President of the First Philippine Republic" losing to his aide-de-camp during the revolution (Manuel Quezon)! You know what the defining issue was then? No other than the execution of Andres Bonifacio.

2. You're right re Bonifacio not being poor--he was middle class but he cared for the poor. Unlike Aguinaldo who cared for the land/real properties of his elite class. Here's Wikipedia again:

"Some analytical historians like Alejo Villanueva claim that what happened at Tejeros, Cavite was actually a coup de etat to wrest power from Bonifacio by the bourgeois or upper class represented by Aguinaldo (The circle or group of Aguinaldo and members of his class enjoyed privilege status even before the revolution. They would not allow a victorious president Bonifacio ordering land and wealth distribution as his first decree.) Hence, the Tejeros Convention was a farce intended to lure Bonifacio to the Caviteño territory. The presidential election was not a national election at all. Participation in the election primarily came from Caviteños. The other provinces in revolt, such as Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Laguna, and Batangas, were not participants."

Thanks for accepting my comment in your site, and I agree with you that Aguinaldo suffered greatly from the assasination of Bonifacio, he covered the man who were responsible for the death of Bonifacio and that, together with his conduct during the American intervetion and of course, the despised Cavitismo made him a lesser hero, but I would have disagree with you that Glenn May’s thesis is “ridiculous” - for his goal was only based on the translations of EDSA and his son, then Agoncillo, if your familiar with the documents, you would know that these three men, witting or unwittingly, made alterations on the documents, these papers is where we exclusively base the Bonifacio in our text book.

I have no intention of debasing Bonifacio, when I say Failure, I was referring of course to his command but without a doubt he did initially launch a very successful recruitment campaign, contrary to the popular historical citations that he was the founder of Katipunan [del Pilar’s brother in law, Deodato was] Bonifacio, without a doubt, was the initiator of the movement, he was a charismatic organizer.

Unfortunately, when he lost his encounters, he also lost his status, it was a mistake for him to go to Cavite and act as the supremo, because the Cavitenos were already winning under Aguinaldo, he was perceived as a disuniter, that he was running away from his fight with the Spaniard in Manila, he was already expendable and his objections during the election sealed his faith, his death in the hands of his fellow Filipinos is truly heartbreaking. Rizal was right after all. We were not ready. So the disorganized and disunited Filipinos became fair game to the voracious Bird of Prey that was America. From one master to another...

Withstonepast, don't let words get in the way of logic. Glenn May's thesis is ridiculous as the work not only selectively ignores incontrovertible facts and document, but as well, makes non sequitur conclusion. amidst possibly suspicious data. By concluding that Bonifacio is (or mostly) a historical reinventing based only on questions about certain historians is silly academic work.

Remember that Pres. Manuel Quezon's no historian, but he was able to demolish Aguinaldo's presidential bid by raising issues about the death & leadership of Bonifacio. If he were lying, who would have believed Quezon?

I find it ridiculous May's claim that Agoncillo largely re-invented Bonifacio in his book. Agoncillo actually has a pro-Aguinaldo slant. If I'll be as indiscriminate as Glenn May is, I'll probably charge that he is in cahoots with Filipino elites who'd want Aguinaldo's soured name restored, or who would want a more compliant Filipino masses by defacing the memory of Bonifacio who, of course, stands for nationalist defiance.

I should probably lead you to Malcolm Churchill's criticism of Glenn May:
Prof. May has a long-standing interest in Andres Bonifacio. However, this interest has to date manifested itself more in efforts to cast doubt upon existing knowledge than to expand our understanding of this revolutionary hero. Although this pattern obviously is continued with the forthcoming book, a dramatic and controversial prior example was May's assault upon Prof. Teodoro A. Agoncillo's The Revolt of the Masses. @Withonespast,

As for Bonifacio being "perceived as a disuniter," that's no excuse to murder a hero, especially a hero who started it all and built the organization of the Katipunan. Was Gen. Antonio Luna, killed by the camp of Aguinaldo, also ineffective in battle? Of course, he wasn't but they also chose to do him because they can't keep him in line with their unpatriotic interests.

I say that more than the Supremo's supposed losses, it's the incompatibility of his populist, nationalist vision with that of the elite that spelled his doom.

& sorry for the delay in posting. I was sick for a time, and then I became incredibly busy.

Jesusa Bernardo said...

@Withonespast,

Allow me to quote from Julio Nakpil's Notes on the Philippine Revolution re Gen. Antonio Luna's assasination bec. such would give us insight into the character & intent of the perpetrators of Bonifacio's murder as well:

(D)riven by his patriotic fervor, he (General Antonio Luna) did not conceal his desire to be the head of the cabinet with the portfolio of war to prevent the autonomists or pacifists from controlling the government of the republic.

They slandered him of wishing to wrest the presidency from Emilio Aguinaldo, and for that purpose they invited him to enter the rattrap of Kabanatuan to enable the very ones whom he had disarmed for cowardice in different war actions to deal him the deathblow...

When General A. Luna was dastardly assassinated on the stairs of the Convent of Kabanatuan and already fallen on the ground, the mother of Emilio Aguinaldo looked out the window and asked: "Ano, humihinga pa ba?" (Is he still breathing?)
